Applying for jobs in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait or Bahrain is competitive. Recruiters often receive hundreds of CVs for one role and spend only a few seconds on each before deciding whether to read more. A clear, Gulf-friendly CV will not guarantee an interview, but a weak one can stop you before anyone sees your experience. This guide explains how to structure a CV for Gulf employers, what to include, what to leave out and how to use a CV template well.
What makes a Gulf CV different?
Gulf employers hire from many countries, so they look for information that helps them assess visa status, availability and relevant experience quickly. Compared with a typical European CV, a Gulf CV often includes a few extra details, such as nationality, current location and visa status, while the basics stay the same: a clean layout, honest information and clear achievements.
The ideal structure of a Gulf CV
- Header: full name, job title you are targeting, phone number with country code, professional email, LinkedIn link and current city (for example "Dubai, UAE").
- Personal details (short): nationality, visa status (such as "UAE residence visa" or "visit visa, available immediately"), notice period and, if relevant, a UAE driving licence.
- Professional summary: three or four lines that say who you are, your years of experience, your strongest skills and the type of role you want.
- Key skills: eight to twelve skills that match the job advert, such as "Arabic and English", "SAP", "customer service", "AutoCAD" or "AI tools for content".
- Work experience: newest first, with company, city, country, dates and three to six bullet points focused on results.
- Education and certifications: degree, institution, year, and any professional certificates.
- Languages: list each language with your level.
Write achievements, not duties
"Responsible for sales" tells a recruiter very little. "Increased monthly showroom sales by 18% in 2025 by introducing a WhatsApp follow-up routine" tells them what you can do. Use numbers where you honestly can: customers served per day, budgets managed, projects completed, time saved or targets reached. Start each bullet with an action verb such as led, built, reduced, trained, improved or launched.
Match your CV to each job
Many companies in the Gulf use applicant tracking systems that scan CVs for keywords. Read the job advert carefully and make sure the same important words appear naturally in your summary, skills and experience. If the advert asks for "MS Excel, reporting and stakeholder management", those words should be in your CV if they are true for you. Keep a master CV and create a tailored copy for each application.
Photo or no photo?
Photos are still common on CVs in the Gulf, and many recruiters expect one for customer-facing roles. If you add a photo, use a recent, professional headshot with a plain background and business clothing. If an employer or recruiter asks for no photo, follow their instructions.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Long CVs: aim for two pages, or one page if you have less than three years of experience.
- Unclear dates or unexplained gaps: add a short line such as "Career break, family relocation".
- Fancy fonts and heavy graphics that do not scan well. Simple, modern layouts work best.
- Spelling mistakes and inconsistent formatting. Ask someone to proofread, or read it aloud.
- Including passport numbers, Emirates ID numbers or bank details. These are not needed on a CV.
- Exaggerating qualifications. Gulf employers often verify certificates and references.
How to use a CV template the right way
A good CV template saves hours of formatting and gives you a professional structure from the start. To get the best from one:
- Choose a layout suited to your field: clean and classic for finance, engineering and government-related roles; slightly more visual for design, marketing and hospitality.
- Replace every sample line with your own information. Never leave placeholder text.
- Keep the fonts and spacing consistent and export to PDF before you send it.
- Name the file clearly, for example "Ahmed-Khan-Accountant-CV.pdf".

Cover letters and LinkedIn
A short cover letter, or a few lines in the email body, still helps in the Gulf. Mention the role, one or two achievements that fit and your availability. Your LinkedIn profile should match your CV: same job titles, dates and headline. Set your location to the city where you want to work, and turn on "Open to work" for recruiters if you are comfortable with that.
Stay safe while job hunting
Genuine employers in the UAE do not ask candidates to pay for a job offer or visa. Be careful with offers that arrive without an interview, ask for fees, or come from free email addresses claiming to be large companies. Check the company website and official channels before sharing documents.
Help in Hindi and Bengali
If you are more comfortable learning in your own language, search terms like "Dubai job ke liye CV kaise banaye" or "দুবাইতে চাকরির জন্য সিভি" bring up many tips. The principles are the same as in this guide: clear structure, honest achievements and a CV tailored to each job. We share short CV tips in Hindi and Bengali on our social channels.
Quick CV checklist before you click "Apply"
- Correct phone number with +971 or your country code, and a professional email.
- Target job title at the top and a summary that matches the role.
- Keywords from the job advert included honestly.
- Achievements with numbers where possible.
- Two pages or less, saved as PDF with a clear file name.
- Proofread twice.
A strong CV is one part of a job search. Combine it with networking, regular applications and interview practice, and you give yourself the best possible chance.
